  8. Welcome to V2600, an Atari 2600 Emulator for UN*X/X, Linux/SVGAlib 
  9. and, thanks to Dan Boris, DOS systems. 
  10.  
  11. The DOS port is currently distributed separately, this document applies
  12. to the X11 and SVGAlib versions.
  13.  
  14. You can now experience all the fun of old 2600 games on your high powered 
  15. workstation. Thrill to the blocky graphics! Get headaches from the flicker! 
  16. Wallow in nostalgia!

  22. Why?
  23. ----
  24. V2600 is the the result on my 3rd year university project. I aimed to preserve
  25. old computer games that would otherwise be lost to the world.

  27. Platforms
  28. ---------
  29. I have tested V2600 on my home Linux system and on a Sparc 2 running 
  30. SunOS 4.3. If you manage to compile it on another platform please send me an
  31. e-mail.

  33. Performance
  34. -----------
  35. The 2600 is notoriously difficult to emulate, especially in C. So I would 
  36. recommend at least a Pentium level processor. The frame buffer speed also 
  37. matters.
  38.  
  39. On my Pentium 100 it is just nice with frame skipping set to 2.
  40.  
  41. Note that enabling sound support slows down the emulation.
  42. Better performance will probably come in later releases.
  43. It also produces quite a bit of debugging output. Redirecting this to
  44. /dev/null speeds things up.

  46. Known Bugs/Limitations
  47. ----------------------
  48. SVGAlib version can lock up your machine. (In common with a lot of SVGAlib 
  49. stuff!)

  51. Not all games work. (Spy hunter looks nice though:)

  53. Beware of the file selector, it doesn't always work.
